SMS: Sour Cherry Pie

Cherry 5

Imagine me with my feet up on my coffee table, left leg crossed over right.  Now imagine my computer resting upon my denim-clad lap.  Now, if you will, imagine me falling asleep at the keyboard.  Yes, folks, I’m in full “relaxation” mode.

Cherry 1Cherry 2Cherry 3

You see, one of my best friends Erin arrived in town last night much to my delight.  So, in honor of her visit, we walked part of San Francisco today.  We hit the Castro, Mission, Haight-Ashbury, and then doubled back around to the financial district and Embarcadero.  Count it!  Thirteen miles!!  Hence, the tired, relaxation mode.

Cherry 4

Needless to say, that’s also my excuse for getting this blog post up so late.  (And I apologize for any incoherent rambling!)

Cherry 7

A big thank you to Michelle of the fabulous blog Flourchild for this week’s SMS choice: sour cherry pie.  (Talk about an awesome, inspirational blog.  Go check it out!!  Oh, and in case you didn’t know, SMS bakes weekly from the Sweet Melissa Baking Book.)  I’ll admit to being skeptical about this pie.  You see, I’m not a big cherry pie fan.  Too much gelatinous, uber-sweet yuckiness.  (Yes, I’m sure many disagree with that assessment.)

Cherry 8

Anyway, that mentality has changed!  I used three cans of Oregon brand water-packed tart cherries, and the pie turned out fabulously.   The bottom crust is a buttery, typical pie dough.  But, the top, oh the top, is a pistachio crumble!  So delicious.  Anyway, I’m super tired, and rather than rave to you about how excellent this pie is, I’m going to do three things: (1) Ply you with pictures of this awesome pie; (2) Send you over to Flourchild to print out this recipe; and (3) Let you go check out the awesome other SMS’ers.

Ooh, I'm not one of those cherry-pie haters: love the stuff. Especially since non-maraschino cherries are relatively uncommon here, d'oh :( Have fun relaxing with pie! So great when the exams are over :)

Cherry-pie haters?? Do they really exsist, weird folks. I love cherries. This looks beautiful, very good to eat a slice when you're in the relax-mode...

Lysy said...

Wow, you earned your pie with all that walking! We don't get sour cherries (or cherry pie) so much in the UK, but yours looks very appealing!

13 miles!! Fantastic job and now you can eat your pie guilt free. It looks fantastic and now I really have to try it, soon!

Oh my! It's Autumn here in Australia...perfect pie weather! I think this looks so decadent, with the crunchy crumble topping, I can imagine how good that would taste with a big scoop of ice cream.

Your pound cake looks rather yummy too!

I'm imagining - and I'm a little jealous! Although in 2 weeks, I'm heading out that way for a whole week, so I just have to be patient :) But I'm 100% with you that most cherry pies are too goopy and sweet. Unless they're made with tart cherries, like this one - which looks delicious!

I love love sour cherry pie!! And will all that walking you did... you could have a slice or two without feeling too guilty.

Katrina said...

All I know is that DOES look amazingly good. But cherry IS one of my favorite pies--even that uber sweet gooky stuff in a can! The topping looks divine (and I have a bag of pistachios). Tempting, tempting. Making your cookies are on my list to do today though! I can't wait.

Treehouse Chef said...

This looks delicious and impressive. I think I may make this for my book club. Thanks so much for sharing!!!!!!!

Ingrid said...

Elyse, I'm not a fan of mushy fruit so usually pick out the bits and eat the "sauce" and crust. That topping looks wonderful. I'll have to keep it in mind.

Excellent looking pie - and I'm glad you realized it wasn't like that sickenly sweet canned garbage that is sold in the stores!

I just got a cherry pitter from a food conference that I attended! I'm excited to use it. Pie sounds like a good recipe to begin with :)

Sour cherry pie is my absolute favorite!!!!! I buy sour cherries by the sh*t-load when they're in season, then pit and freeze them so I can get my fix for most of the year :D Looks divine!

OOOOh cherry pie is my favorite!!! How can you hate it? In fact, I love all pies - cherry, rhubarb strawberry, apple, pear, you name it. This one looks soooooo good!

margot said...

I agree that a lot of cherry pies are too sweet, but this was a great one! Yours looks fabulous and you definitely deserve a slice after walking a half-marathon's worth of miles.

Liz said...

I agree--most cherry pie made with that awful "pie filling" is so gloopy and sweet it's practically inedible. But I love sour cherry pie! And the pistachio topping sounds awesome. Your pie looks delicious! Might I suggest you have another slice and continue on in relaxation mode...

Kerstin said...

Cherry pie has been my favorite ever since I was a little girl! I love the pistachio crumble on top - it looks incredible!

Alyssa Goodnight said...

Oh, but that looks yummy! I use those same cherries to make an apple/cherry pie with crumble topping, so I'm halfway there already. But still, this pie is calling out to me.

Glad you were able to enjoy a relaxing day with a good friend!

Maris said...
